That said, the engine simply isn't capable of handling anything past ~500MB, and it's conceivable that a very heavy load order (4K textures, too many added NPCs, etc.) will still fill up the NVSE-enlarged heap.

The New Vegas Script Extender (NVSE) includes a port of sheson's memory patch (originally developed for Skyrim) that allows you to increase the heap allocation. If that heap space fills up, you'll crash with the "out of memory" pop-up. The "out of memory" error specifically concerns the game's heap memory allocation, which is set to 200MB by default. If you're hitting the 2GB limit (the thing that the 4GB loader helps with), you'll just crash straight to the desktop without an error message at all. The "out of memory" error isn't addressed at all by the 4GB loader.
